Because there were regions in 13th century Norway that had little water and an abundance of beer, some Catholics started baptizing people in beer instead of water.
It became significant enough that Pope Gregory IX wrote a letter stating: “Since according to the Gospel teaching, a man must be born again of water and the Holy Ghost, those are not to be considered validly baptized who have been baptized with beer.”
